I had to go back and re-read .... your original question is on
lever... and cowboy look... If it's a self defense gun... semi
auto all the way. BTW, you can go online and build an AR at
Palmetto State Armory and build an AR for ~ 4-500 bucks.... AND
even better get it chambered in 9MM .... I'd have all my self
defense guns chambered in 9MM .... I would buy boxes and boxes
and boxes of ammunition... Anyway... that's what I would do...

    An AR chambered in 9mm?

    Ummmmmm..... no thanks.

Pistol caliber carbines are pretty hot in Steel Challenge, 3-gun, USPSA and
now there's a PPC class in IDPA. The receivers are now made to accept Glock mags, which means you have a choice from 17 round to 33 round, and even up to the 50+ round drums. The Sig MPX and the modern CZ Skorpion are perfect examples of other PPC's. In the past a special magazine adapter was need to feed Uzi or other subgun mags into an AR lower. The 9mm operates on blowback instead of direct impingement.

    That may all be true.

The OP was talking about a "self-defense" AR.

Makes no sense to have an AR for that purpose chambered in 9mm.

That depends; I can certainly see an argument for it's viability. Most self defense situations are relatively close in, so you don't need the extra range of an intermediate round like the 223/556, and 9mm will drastically reduce the risk of overpenetration, enlarge the wound cavity, deliver a heavier round, and reduce the complexity of your ammunition situation if you're running other 9mm firearms.

9mm is also cheaper to shoot in most cases, so you're more likely to train with your actual self defence gun.

Certainly not the best choice for everyone or for all SD situations, but there's certainly a niche where it makes sense.

    Are you sure...

Most people are more accurate with a long gun over a pistol. Never mind accuracy, most people just find long guns easier to handle.

Most, all, defensive shooting are done withing a few feet.. or at most yards aways from you. If you are claiming "self defense" and you are shooting someone at long ranges... you might be the criminal.

The problem with using high powered rounds, in any situation never mind a
self defense situation, is that you own the bullet after it leaves the gun.
If it travels through the perpetrator and into someone else ... its all on you... That incidental victim is all on you... and they could be a a family member.

When I carry, and I carried all the time... while in Florida ... Not today because I'm in the Socialistic Republic of Canada... I used a 9mm with a
R,I.P. round. I chose R.I.P rounds for my daily carry gun because they fragment upon impact... and those fragments taking their own trajectories.

My daily carry gun, 2 mags plus one in the chamber totaled 35 rounds. Enough to "STOP", or repel, any threat.

I argue that you should have most, if not all, your self defense firearms chambered in the same caliber. When shit actually hits the fan during a
Zombie Apocalypse, and we're almost there now, you'll be happy to have more than on firearm to use to repel said zombies from eating your family.

Moreover, I'm cheap AF and 9mm rounds can be bought in bulk for pennies per round... I've paid from .15 to .17 cents per round... Obviously, my R.I.P. rounds were more.

There is a reason 9mm is the most popular round... All hail 9mm, you are righteous and awesome in your ballistics.

As it stands.... the best self defense round is 9mm. If you cannot repel a threat with that round... your penis is small and you're trying to compensate with that with the use of a higher caliber.

    Just saying...
