i would suggest getting a way to treat water and make it drinkable and
contain it if you live near a water source.

Good suggestion. That is something I am missing in my setup to a degree.

My house is placed right next to a river and we have a good well. We have not made any analysis on the water, though. Horses and dogs drink it fine.

If the animals are drinking from the source then it's a pretty safe bet that the water is fine since animals will die from dehydration before they will drink tainted water.

Sounds like if the internet goes out, it is a good idea to make a trip
to the grocery store before things get crazy.

And water. Store water, fill your bathtubs, fill every container you
    have.

for long-term storage, the better bet is to get distilled water, it lasts longer. Alternatively, if you do use tap water, add 4-5 drops of unscented liquid household chlorine bleach per gallon to keep it fresh.

distilled water isn't great for drinking i've heard. it has no minerals in
    it.

i've heard people say it depletes you of those minerals you need. i'm not so sure about that.

FYI, you are not supposed to drink distilled water on any longer term basis.
