installing synchronet is really not a project. it takes minutes.

I think you overlooked me saying that I had Synchronet running a decade ago.

You also don't know me at all. Everything is a project. If or when I install SBBS again, it won't be just to read messages. :D

    Hi Skylar,

recently I've done similar search in order to find
something that runs well on linux.

I came across SEMPOINT -- quite nice client that ran well
in wine. I didn't try it in win 10, but I've read somewhere
on the nets here that it runs fine there -- you just need
some tool for win16 compatibility. I can't remember the
    name though.

I tried running it on my win 11 machine in compatibility
mode for win 95 and the setup program wouldn't even load.

The best Windows-based "reader" would be WinPoint, imho.

    mentioning it.

I use Sempoint for many years. It supports QWK, BW, and MSG
style. It has many bbs/fido -centric things like stealing and
using taglines, and threading of messages.

But give Winpoint a try as well. All you need to do is get
established as a point with a BBS that will give you a unique
    number.

Ftn is pretty easy to setup;you just get the numbers right.

I hate to say that I have forgotten everything I know about Ftn. Getting old sux.

I was in Fidonet between the years of 1988-1997 and everything was DOS-based back then and run with magnanimous batch files (I recently found some of my old setups on floppies.) :)

I ran mailers like SEAdog, Frontdoor, Binkleyterm and Intermail.
BBSes: Opus, QuickBBS, RemoteAccess (never ran Fido BBS)

All controlled with a batch file called SVC.BAT which was originally written by a guy named Gee Wong and totally bastardized and modsified by moi... it would do system functions in the order on the command line like:

    SVC scan toss backup runbbs

Sorry for getting carried away and rambling...

Yeah, it's pretty easy to set up. But IMO it's good to put some time into customizing it so that it's not a stock setup, and that is the project.

It certainly is. And I wish I had time to do more with it.

I originally set it (3.19) up about a year ago, but did not expose it to the world.

Then one of my sysop buds who was running 'Retrorunning BBS' decided he was going to shut his down and rather than let that happen, I copied his into my BBS machine and exposed it... only had to change the port numbers to keep it in the same range with my other BBS (an Atari 8bit BBS) which runs on an emulator on the same machine.

    But... I'm rambling again.

If you are running in on *nix and have to compile it, that can also become
    a project.

it's not about being old, it's just because you forgot what you didn't practice. I've forgotten tons of things.

I've written some huge batchfiles and other scripts that I just couldn't do today.
