• sed 4.9+ for Win32?

From Shurato@618:300/50 to All on Wed Jan 3 13:23:00 2024
I haven't had any success finding a Win32 binary for sed newer than 4.2.1.
Does anyone have a link? All I could find were pages without links or 64 bit binaries. I'm trying to get a batch file to work with fastecho to add TZUTC kludges, but it doesn't work with my version. For some reason, it doesn't support surrounding the command with ' and doesnt' seem to support \x0D or
    any other hex values...

Chocolatey has sed 4.9 available if you use it (and you should).

"choco install sed" will do it.

If you aren't using Chocolatey with Windows, you should be. It's a package manager for Windows like apt or rpm.

I just went back to Win7 (cause I didn't feel lik hunting for drivers for WinXP to get stuff working -- since' the system is on it's own and not vm) because Win10's NTVDM got changed AGAIN in one of the last few updates causing some of the older doors not to be able to read a cmd line for where the drop file wise. I load it in Win7, worked fine. Win10, just quit and errored out, even tho it worked months before hand. Sigh.

If it's win32, it should work under Windows 7. If the win32 binary exists
for win10, it would probably run under windows 7. It's just that the power shell commands don't work with win7 powershell using the choclatey interface.
I guess I could upgrade to windows 10 32bit, but I like the slimmed requirements of win7 and don't have it open to the wild, only port
forwarded to the various bbs related servers.

If I'm left without a choice but a 64bit OS, I might. It was just the legacy console application setting that I was missing. EleBBS has a linux version, butit doesn't have it's own telnet server, so I'm not sure how well it would work using the BBS with inetd and linux. Some of the RA compatible dos doors might not work with dosemu that way, though, dunno.

i think some people have hardware issues, whether they be motherboard or memory, and it carries over into vms having issues. faulty memory can do some weird things.

Ditto here - started running Windows 10 32-bit on a Thinkpad T60, then
moved onto a Proxmox VM. I've gotten rid of most of my DOS dependencies,
I could probably move to a 64-bit VM, get a little more memory to play

yeah they still make stripped down versions but stuff can be broken.
you can really just run windows 10 with 2 gigs of ram probably.

microsoft says min req is 2gb for win 10 64bit, 1gb for 32bit.

    Yes... LTSC.

I meant even "lite"er. TinyXP was missing Internet Explorer and all of
    the other built-in apps.

well it was gutted. it had services removed.
I don't think THAT was even necessary because xp runs with very little resources as well. i think it got the attention of people who were hoping
for something they really didn't need.

i ran tinyxp and tiny7 before. then i figured fuck it, run the real thing. it's less broken and the requirements are low.

yeah they still make stripped down versions but stuff can be broken.
you can really just run windows 10 with 2 gigs of ram probably.

I ran my BBS on a mobile Core 2 duo and 3GB nicely on 32-bit Windows.
    Ran a Shoutcast station, too.

years ago i ran windows 7 on a netbook with like 1gig of memory and i was playing wow (warcraft) at work with the settings cranked down and tethered to my phone. it worked decent but i wouldn't do any raiding.

Depends on what you have. I ran the BBS on a 1 ghz Celeron with 512 MB
of RAM on it, and it ran surprisingly well. This was a HP Pavilion PC
from 1999-2000, the only real limitation with it was the HD interface
    maxxed out at ATA-33.
