• virtual box install on win7

From August Abolins@618:250/1.9 to All on Sun Dec 29 22:50:00 2024
Anyone here have experience in installing VirtualBox on a Win7
    machine?

I went through a successful Python pip install (for some
required dependencies), but a subsequent install of virtualbox
    itself fails.

Grabbed the latest VB offering at the Oracle site: version
    7.1.4 and 64bit.

My pc is 64bit, and 8GB ram.

Is there an installation log that documents the issues
encountered during install? ..there doesn't seem to be
    anything in program directory.

I suspect your issue is you are trying to instal a modern Virtualbox on an old unsupported OS. Check your Virtualbox version supports Windows 7 as a host.

If you just want to use yt-dlp for casual use I would just get a copy of Tiny Core Linux or a similar compact Live Linux distribution and boot from it. It is much saner and leaner on resources than setting a virtualization stack on an old machine.

That does seem to be the case, unawares. The Oracle site did
not mention any win7 limitations up front. I will look into
the docs as you mentioned. Meanwhile, I got a tip from someone
else that 6.0.24 would be my best shot.

6.0.24 install went rather smooth, but it killed access to the
internet! I was able to talk to my router and local network
devices, but there was no access to the outside.

I rebooted several times and restarted my usual things like
Tailscale VPN several times, but the internet refused to
    recover.

I ended up doing a system Restore back to the point before all
this started. That recovered the internet. But at this point,
I am not too excited to try all that again just yet.

yt-dlp is my driving force for all this. Apprently, Win7 is
nolonger supported primarily because the newest yt-dlp needs
    Python 3.9, but Win7 cannot use Python 3.9 :(

I just wanted a simple convenient way to pull vid material when
needed. A linux intance via VB sounded ideal. I really don't
want to boot with a live-CD each time I discover a vid that
    looks interesting.

Meanwhile.. I learned about coLinux and andLinux. The concept
for those sound like a good alternative. But I have to hope
that they will support python 3.9.

    Have you tried ClipGrab?

Could you dual boot? While I personally don't like opensuse I run it on my mediacentre (long story I don't feel like going into right now) and it installed great and even partitioned my HDD so I can boot windows again if I want / need to.

I've been using "4k Video Downloader" for many many years and while it required a license, it was cheap and I have not had to update said license in years while always getting the new version.

Works great with Youtube anyway as I download crap for viewing offline when I'm in the woods.

I really liked the sound of a concurrent OS such as what a VB
install would provide. I think dual boot is overkill for my
occassional linux use right now - I may as well just LIVE-CD
boot to linux, and install yt-dlp, after tagging a pile of vids
to download and get them all done during one session.

Or.. I am now considering a separate refurbished W10 laptop
that I might like to try WSL with.

But before I go that route, the andlinux and colinux route
looks appealing, especially for my XP machine.

I have use 4k VD in the past. For some reason I stopped using
it - when the ads on the pages seemed to be more aggressive
before allowing the actual download. I was/am not interested
    it paying for it.

Yep.. that's the idea. But generally I avoid "crap" and prefer
    quality stuff. ;)

    Doesn't work:

"python.exe - System Error: The program can't start because api ms-win-core-path-l1-1-0.dll is missing from your computer. Try
reinstalling the prrogram to fix it."

After closing the several duplicate error pop-ups, there is one
final pop-up: "GlipGrab uses youtube-dlp in order to download
videos from the internet.." SO.. this won't work for my win7
system since youtube-dlp is nolonger supported for Win7.

Gotcha. I don't mind paying for software that makes my life easy. Just a different way of looking at life I suppose. I don't care to fight with a bunch of BS when I just want to download and watch some videos offline when I'm not on my fast home connection.

Except when finding a tool to do it. ;)

Too old of a Python install, most likely.
