• Poor SIO2k performance with BBS

From Schizo@618:200/10 to All on Sun Aug 18 20:01:54 2024
So, google has failed me on this, and I figure ya'll might have some idea what obvious thing I missed.

The BBS is running TG/2, using SIO2k for telnet, but the performance via the network is... less than satisfactory.

I'm assuming it's something in the modem configuration I either don't remember or skimmed over in the docs, but at time the latency feels exceedingly high and/or slower than expected, given everything is locked at 57600.

The major performance thing is loading big ANSI screens like menus or doors; you can end up looking non-responsive for 10-15 seconds and then getting a big dump all at once which is certainly confusing to people since it looks broken.

But: everything is locked, set to the same speed, and the modem configurations are the correct irq/dma and like, it all works, just slower than I'm expecting.

There something I should look at that anyone remembers, or am I just misremembering the performance due to like, 30 years of haze?

If possible, use SIO 1.60d instead of SIO2K. I noticed a performance increase when I switched back to SIO 1.60d. I'm using a DOS BBS on my ArcaOS system, and it works very smoothly. Stop by telnet://bbs.bnbbbs.net:2023 to see it in action.

Ray has told me that SIO2K has issues and to use 1.60d.

That fixed it, thanks. Assumed I had either done something wrong or it was the fact it's a VM making it perform badly but I'll take an easy solution of 'use something else' ;)

Are you using a cracked version? I spoke to Ray and he told me I should
hand out the crack I have for it as he can no longer make reg keys.

as the others mentioned 1.60d is the way. i had similar issues on my os2 box.

sadly this version only supports 4 ports only :(

Yep, I have cracked versions of both 1.6d and 2k, the ones with the screenshot of Ray saying it's fine to use.

Mine's showing it's a 4 port version as well, and it's also the only one I've ever seen, so that may just be the limit at this point?

Yeah, 4 ports not being enough sounds like a wonderful problem to have, if unlikely.

(...and I'm only running 2 nodes anyway.)

Just so you and everyone else knows, SIO can tell when it's cracked. It
will doing random thingsa, like not connect, slow down the connection, and other fun things. If that happens, delete SIO.SYS and try a different crack
    on it.
