I have attempted to use the suggestions provided by you but I am failing to understand.
    Per your instructions I added the *H to elconfig>messages>external editor. c:\ele\ice.cmd *N *M *H
My iceedit command is ice.cmd which reads:
    @echo off
    /WAIT C:\ELE\ICEEDIT.EXE

When a message is attempted, the local screen shows the Iceedit screen for about 3 seconds but returns to the message menu of the bbs. The remote side just shows "message aborted"
I have tried several combinations of ice.cmd command line but must be missing something somewhere. According to the docs all you really need is C:\ELE\ICEEDIT.EXE but you can use C:\ELE\ICEEDIT /D: C:\ELE to point to the drop file location when using RA.
Not sure what I am missing here.

If you're running multi-node, your drop file should be in c:\ele\node%1 .

I am running multinode. According to my interpretation of the docs IceEdit
will automatically detect the drop file location or you can point to the location. I may be mistaken in my understanding. (Wouldn't be the first
time) I have tried many variations of the .cmd and end elconfig without success. My ele log shows "OS SHELL: c:\ele\ice.cmd *H 2 57600 9983 400
I will keep at it and may luck into the correct combination.

    I've used 1.60d since 1996 without issue.

Do you use Vmodem with that version? If so are you using a non standard port?
I never could get Vmodem to work with it.
    Thanks!

Yes and yes, non-standard port. It explains how to set a non-standard
telnet port in the VMODEM docs. You have to modify your "services" file (usually in C:\MPTN\ETC and the filename has no extension; just called "services") by commenting out the "telnet" ports and adding "vmotelnet" instead.

My services file reads (deleted both "telnet" lines):

    vmotelnet 10323/tcp
    vmotelnet 10323/udp

You must reboot the computer after making these changes.
