Aren't these things generally done after a person retires? IMO he shouldn't get one while still
actively driving in F1 but without a doubt he should be honoured afterwards.

The convention normally only relates to sports people, who are
recognised for sporting prowess alone, and only to Knight/Damehoods.

Most sports people that get knighted do not not get it only for their
sporting prowess. They are very often involved in other things (often
not made public) to help people and they get the knighthood because of that.

I don't know if the New Years List issued last December was typical, but
there appear to have been 19 Knights and 18 Dames. There were no
sportspeople.

I imagine there would be a similar number in a typical Birthday Honours
list, but there wasn't a typical list this year.

There have been around 150 sporting knights & dames dating back to 1926
very few who received the honour before the 1980s (maybe later) would
have earned millions from their sport.
