I believe Schumi tried smoking when he won the WC in 1995. All his friends
slagged him off I heard!!!
Damon Hill tried smoking a big cigar after he won the WC last year.
Apparantly he coughed, spluttered and gave up after a few puffs.
I saw a photo of Niki Lauda smoking (a cigarette) in 1994 or
thereabouts. I am sure he did not smoke when he was driving though.

Hey everyone,
Just came across this thread now as I just heard that Heinz Harald Frentzen used to smoke.
I used to smoke back then too but they were different times.

Can't help but wonder, are some drivers smokers? If so, who?Jan Magnussen is IMHO the only current driver who smokes.

In the 1964 British GP at Brands, Innes Ireland (who finished 10th in the BRP) pulled off the track just beyond the finish line and jumped out for a smoke.

Who was the old driver who'd get into the car and hand his cigar to the mechanic?
(before your time but maybe you recall ?)

Not sure about the cigar, could have been one of the pre-war Mercedes
drivers - von Brauchitsch possibly. He was an aristocrat and treated is
team mate Lang, who was of humble origins rather scornfully.
Of course up until the 1960s almost everyone smoked and racing drivers were no exception. Stirling Moss certainly smoked cigarettes at one time and
both Hawthorn and Collins smoked pipes.
Safety standards were a lot less rigourous then, as witnessed by this
picture of Alfonso de Portago having his fuel level checked:

There was a time when it was considered a sophisticated and slightly rebellious thing to do, rather than a fuckwit thing to do.

Not sure about the cigar, could have been one of the pre-warJimmy Bryan, who had a win and 18 WCD points in 9 appearances at Indianapolis in the 1950s (as well as winning the first Race of Two

I donrCOt think it was regarded as particularly sophisticated - although your
social status was, to some extent, marked by the brand you smoked - it was just something that almost everybody did (IrCOm talking the 1950s and early 60s).
