I am looking forward to see what George Russell can do in the
Mercedes. My enthusiasm is, of course, tempered by the knowledge that
he will be driving a car that is new to him in every aspect: controls
    and handling characteristics.

So I don't have much hope that he will win the race.

But, whatever happens this weekend, I am happy that Mercedes has given
    him the opportunity.

This is great news for George and for F1 fans, I really hope he does well.
Of course it has come at an ideal moment with Mercedes having already tied
up the WCC and he should be a better driver when he returns to Williams.

If Russell wins, and Bottas has an uneventful race, I would imagine we'll never hear the end of it in terms of Hamilton being knocked from his pedestal!

Best realistic result is ahead of Albon, behind Bottas and Max (potentially), if
he does that it would be an exceptional result. And if he proves that a talented
youngster can't just get in the Merc and win straight off the bat, that would be
no bad thing for the debate about the car.

No, they have not run it before.

"This is the first Formula One race on this track configuration.
"This race will use the 'Outer Circuit' layout, the first
Formula One race to be held on this layout. At 3.543 km (2.202 mi)
it is shorter than the 5.412 km (3.363 mi) 'Grand Prix' layout,
which was used for the Bahrain Grand Prix the week prior.[4]
The race is due to be contested over 87 laps to exceed the 305 km
(190 mi) race distance mandated by the regulations.[1][5]
Lap times are expected to be under one minute. The only World
Championship Grand Prix weekend where sub-one minute lap times have
been achieved is the 1974 French Grand Prix at Dijon-Prenois."

No, but it's not a big change in layout. From the track used last
weekend turns 1-4 are retained with a different middle section that
joins turn 4 to turn 9 on last w/e's layout.

The 'new' section has 4 turns all of which might be taken flat out. That section is just over half the length of the pit straight.

Surely this configuration calls for quite a different drag/downforce setup?

That seems unlikely for turns 7 and 8.

Yes indeed, a name borne by two famous men. The first became Lord
Beaverbrook, a press baron loved by many, loathed by as many more. He owned
the Daily Express when it had the largest circulation in the world, was a friend of Churchill and Minister of Aircraft Production in the early part
    of WW2.
His son, also Max Aitken, was an outstanding wartime fighter pilot who
later became an MP and chairman of Beaverbrook Newspapers.

Are they using the DAS in race config? Maybe it's because I've watched live races in German (which I don't speak!) but I've not noticed the DAS in use on race day. If that's the case, simple enough to lock it out surely?

I reckon George is a candidate for Champion eventually but stepping up to the Merc will be a big step so I'm not expecting too much from him other than a solid weekend. And the team won't expect more either, fans on the other hand ...
Drivers don't/shouldn't get caught up in expectations. I'd expect he will take it step by step and try to keep a lid on it even if he's last or first at any stage of the weekend.
There is plenty of time after the race to get swept up in success or crushed by failure.
