Chelsea - Wolfsburg 1-2 (HT)

First round of the group stage played yesterday, second round already next week:
Some notable results:
Barcelona - Arsenal 4-1
Dominating performance by Barca, who looks to be in a different league altogether.
Benfica - Bayern 0-0
This should count as a big surprise, I guess.
Servette - Juventus 0-3
Comfortable win for Juve, the question is how they will fare against Wolfsburg and Chelsea

Do yous think that Lyon will win it again this year, or did last season signal the end of an era?Going over last year's results, it looks as if they are as dominant as ever, but PSG had their number. The two league matches between the two ended 0-0 and 1-0 to PSG, and in the CL quarterfinals PSG advanced thanks to the away goal rule (0-1 in Paris, 1-2 in Lyon).
I think Juve's goal should be to try and get into that Wolfsburg-Bayern tier, but I don't thin they're there yet.

Juve have been mostly holding their own, but a bad defensive read by Salvai and Gama leaves a highway to Cuthbert, who easily slots past Peiraud-Magnin.
Bonansea! 1-1
In the other match in the group, Wolfsburg beat Servette 5-0. Will this go down to goal difference? That would be a huge achievement for Juve.

On one of them, Chelsea is 3 on 3, Kerr's initial shot is blocked, Juve can't clear the lines, Pernille Harder pounces on the rebound and makes it 2-1.
A few minutes later Kerr has another chance, but Peiraud-Magnin has a great effort to push her curling shot onto the post. This time Lundorf (Juve's weakest link) beats Harder to the rebound and clears.

Juve held their own, but objectively Chelsea was the better team. With a bit luck we could have come out with a draw or maybe even a win. Juve has made huge strides in closing the gap with the very top teams in the continent, but it's the last step that is always the hardest...
So far, it looks as if Breidablik's insertion in the second pot was
not really justified given the transformation of women's soccer over
the past few years. I would like to say that Juve is the only Pot 3
team that can actually give a fight to the superfavorites, but maybe
the match against Chelsea was just an outlier. It will be back to
earth against Wolfsburg.
Other matches this week:The seeding still looks skewed - Real Femenino were in Pot 3, too, due to no previous European matches under
Arsenal - Hoffenheim 4-0
Koge - Barcelona 0-2 (more difficult than I expected for Barca)
PSG - Zhytobud 5-0
Real Madrid - Breidablik 5-0 (looks like Real will qualify from the third pot)
Wolfsburg-Servette 5-0
Juvenbtus - Chelsea 1-2
Lyon - Benfica 5-0 (back to earth for Benfica after holding Bayern to a 0-0 draw)
Bayern-BK Hacken 4-0

The seeding still looks skewed - Real Femenino were in Pot 3, too, due to no previous European matches underJuve also suffered from having a high enough country coefficient to skip the first qualifying rounds, and then being drawn there against Barcelona and Lyon (for a grand total of zero points earned), so no way to accumulate coefficient points by beating up on some minnows.
their belt, and you were only in Pot 3 because you were also still missing two European seasons in the
5-year-coefficient. (to the detriment of Austrian champions St. P||lten who were officially the higher-seeded team
in their qualifiers against Juve - there were some very unbalanced 4-team groupings).

Nightmarish first 10 minutes for Juve, but then we settled down and were more or less Wolfsburg's equals, even if they had most of the possession. It will be quite something if Die Bayern Frauen can turn this tie around (2-1 first leg). The have only four subs on the bench, all teenagers and two of them are keepers.Yeah, that's a shame.
PSG took an early lead, but Saki Kumagai equalized soon after (it seems as if I have an uncanny ability today to miss all the goals). Then more chances for PSG. I won't be able to follow the rest of the match, but I'm rooting for Bayern the underdog here.

Around the 70th minute: Bayern - PSG 0-1I was at this game... we played well and had more chances, but set
piece defending let us down. A good FK for the 1-2 around 80' was all
we managed. We've never recovered from losing Miedema.
Daebritz is at PSG since about 4 seasons... she hit the corner
leading to the scramble leading to the 0-1.

Bayern's goalkeeper Leitzig was at fault for PSG's goal (more Werner-inspired goalkeeping), but then made it up with a string of fine saves to keep Bayern in the game. PSG takes on Olymp...erm... the winner of OL-Juve in the semifinal.
Dare I say it, but Juve are actually holding their own better than in the first leg. This will make the inevitable Lyon triumph all the more painful.

And two minutes later, Malard makes it 2-0. Game over.

Actually I thought it wasn't that bad, more unlucky than just plain horrible.
I also realise that my sweeping criticism of women's goalkeeping will now probably jinx poor Zinsi.

yearning for competitiveness that regular old Bayern simply don't
provide anymore? I mean, you can squash Dortmund's pitiful hopes
only so many times before it goes quite stale, can't you?

Ah, you read too much into it... I guess you feel Salzburg could have
gone on a long run had they beaten (the very beatable) us.
BvB just aren't good enough. Look at the points in the league. WeI have a feeling Adeyemi will fail in Dortmund, too. He's no Haaland, and despite everyone's assertion to the contrary it appears to me that 's what they're
might just get 80, but they will struggle to get 70.
I keep hoping for Frankfurt or Gladbach, but keep being disappointed.--- SBBSecho 3.06-Win32
I go to amateur matches because it is easy: no U-bahns in the time of
the pandemic (which has _not_ ended yet), and one is always outdoors.
The women's matches are easy to get tickets to (with a couple
exceptions this season after the fans came back), and the location is
very convenient for me coming from the north side on a Sunday.

Barca comfortably won the first leg 5-1 in front of a new 90,000 record crowd. Wolfsburg defense had no answer to Barca midfielders' late runs into the box (almost all the goals followed this pattern). In the return leg, it was Barca dominant again in the first half but they couldn't find the net. Wolfsburg made it interesting with two goals by Wassmuth and Roord in the second half, and the final minutes were nervy ones for the Barca defense. Juve closes the campaign as the only team to have taken points off Wolfsburg at home.
In the French duel, the first leg was not one for Werner and others who appreciate fine goalkeeping. Lyon came out on top 3-2, but PSG goalie Votikova had a big hand in all three of them. In the return leg, Lyon took an early lead with a fine header by Hegerberg, Katoto equalized in the 62nd minute. PSG pressed on for the equalizer, and came close, but Christian Endler did well to snuff out a 1v1. In the end it was a towering header by Wendie Renard that closed matters for good.
The final is on May 21. It should be a good one.
