    Obviously, good set and little/no check would affect the back, but if one can't always have that, then what?
    I'm a high school coxswain and it's my 5th season. I developed arthritis pretty quickly because I cox in freezing temperatures. Apparently, my upper and lower back pain is from arthritis I developed from coxing. Also, as a side note, I have arthritis in my knees from being bent all day and in my fingers from steering. I've only been coxing for 4 years and I already have pretty painful repercussions.
